12 Days of Holidays: Day 10 – Marquis Wine Cellars
Pop the champagne bottles! For our NYE business feature, we are focusing on an iconic long-standing West End business that provides the best wine options in the city, along with a friendly community feel, Marquis Wine Cellars.
Marquis Wine Cellars first opened its doors in the West End’s Davie Village back in 1986 to address the local’s need for high-quality wines partnered with expertise and care that matched. After an expansive renovation that doubled their store in size, they celebrated their grand reopening in September 2014, with renovations including a custom designed ‘Fine Wine Room’ (temperature-controlled cellar) that houses nearly 2,000 bottles and a 3,000 bottle cooler filled with local and imported wines and ciders, as well as a good selection of port, sherry and sake within their doors.
John Clerides is the proprietor of Marquis and a prominent member of the West End community. His love of great food and wine was fostered in his family restaurant from a young age, since 1977, giving him a wide range of experiences that all combine to make Marquis the unique space that it is today. He has travelled extensively though Australia, Washington, California, Italy, Spain, France, etc. sourcing unique, flavourful, undiscovered wines. Even after 25 years his quest for discovery remains unabated.
John and the Marquis Wine Cellars team pride themselves on their hands-on approach, personally visiting growers and tasting thousands of wines each year. They also work with local restaurants and caterers throughout the city to perfect wine pairings and create wine lists that dazzle even the most seasoned of sommeliers.

Marquis Wine Cellars is first and foremost a community based business that actively seeks to enhance our neighbourhood. Some of the charities they currently support via sales percentages or special deals include: The Vancouver Food Bank (they just donated $2500!), Canuck Place’s Gift of Time, Dr. Peter AIDS Foundation, St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation and most recently Ovarian Cancer Canada.
If all that wasn’t enough, the adaptable team was one of the first businesses to pivot to online offerings during the first wave of COVID-19, moving wine tastings to Zoom, offering online deliveries/pick-ups and writing up a comprehensive health and safety plan when other’s were still unaware of the coming risk.
The cherry on top is that during all of this, John purchased and began renovating the neighboring numbers Cabaret, a legendary LGBTQ+ nightclub. Their outdoor patio was a one of the summers hottest spots, and the community is looking forward to returning en masse post- COVID restrictions!
Stop in to visit them today and pick up the perfect bottle, no matter the occasion!
