African Descent Festival 2025
August 9 – August 10 @ English Bay Beach/1800 Davie Plaza
The African Descent Festival Brings Vibrant Culture and Community to Vancouver’s West End
The African Descent Festival returns to Vancouver this August 9th and 10th, and we couldn’t be more excited to welcome this vibrant cultural celebration to the West End. Taking place at English Bay Beach, the festival offers a weekend full of music, dance, art, food, and community spirit, all with free admission for attendees.
A Celebration of Culture, Unity, and Art
Now in its latest edition, the African Descent Festival is a unique and powerful event that celebrates the diversity of people of African descent in Vancouver. With a mission to promote inclusivity and unity among all ethnic groups, the festival brings together community members from across the city and beyond for a joyous celebration of African heritage.
This family-friendly event showcases public art, cultural installations, traditional and modern performances, crafts, night markets, and more. From afrobeat rhythms to powerful spoken word, the programming is designed to engage audiences of all backgrounds while honouring the African diaspora’s deep-rooted history and growing presence in Vancouver.
Reconnecting with the Spirit of Hogan’s Alley
This year, the festival also places a spotlight on the cultural legacy of Hogan’s Alley – once a thriving Black community in Vancouver. By activating public spaces and collaborating with local businesses and organizations, the African Descent Festival works to bring awareness to this often-overlooked piece of the city’s history and spark important conversations about community, resilience, and recognition.
A Positive Impact for the West End
As one of Vancouver’s most diverse and welcoming neighbourhoods, the West End is proud to host an event that aligns so well with our community’s values. Events like the African Descent Festival help bring thousands of visitors to the area, which in turn supports our local shops, restaurants, and small businesses.
From increased foot traffic to opportunities for local vendors, festivals like this help breathe new life into our streets and public spaces. Whether you’re enjoying food from local African cuisine vendors, shopping handmade goods at the craft fair, or simply soaking in the beachside atmosphere, the festival offers something for everyone – and a great reason to spend the day in the West End.
