Davie Street Redesign
Davie Village is set to receive a major transformation through the City of Vancouver’s Space for People project. The project will create wider sidewalks along Davie Street between Jervis Street and Thurlow Street, providing more room for people to walk, gather, shop and enjoy the neighbourhood.
The improvements are designed to create a more welcoming and people-focused Davie Village while supporting local businesses as downtown Vancouver continues to grow.
The project includes upgrades to sidewalks, roadways and underground infrastructure, while also preparing the area for future climate challenges through increased tree shade and improved rainwater management.
What’s Changing?
One of the most noticeable changes will be the expansion of sidewalks from approximately three metres to six metres wide. The additional space will include:
- New street furniture, painted pink to match the existing streetscape
- Space for patios along storefronts
- More room for people waiting for and boarding buses
- The return of the iconic Heart of Davie neon sign
- A new, colourful shared seating area
- New light poles with pedestrian lighting
A new mid-block crossing will also be added between Bute Street and Thurlow Street. An Intersex-Inclusive Pride Progress Flag will be painted at the new crossing, as well as at the Davie Street and Bute Street crosswalk.
Below the surface, the project will include infrastructure upgrades designed to support the neighbourhood for years to come, including:
- Larger tree pits to support healthier trees
- Green rainwater infrastructure
- Upgraded electrical infrastructure
The project will also add more designated accessible parking spaces for SPARC permit holders on each block, along with new pick-up and drop-off areas.
Together, these improvements will create more space for people while enhancing the character, accessibility and functionality of Davie Village. To read more about the project, click here.
