Artist Statement: This mural captures the joys and hardships I experience as a sapphic person by blending two contrasting art styles to reflect the duality of my identity. The more simplified style, which dominates the mural, celebrates queer joy through popular queer symbols such as a carabiner with keys commonly worn by sapphics on their pant loop. In contrast, the realistic portion of the mural features a flower with a stem shaped like a face, illustrating both the beauty of our relationships and the quiet isolation we feel as outcasts in our communities. I wanted to represent both aspects of the queer experience because while celebrating queer happiness is important, acknowledging our struggles allows others who are hurting to feel seen, validated, and less alone.⁠
