Spotlight Series: Café Portrait

Europe’s Best Coffee & an Art Feast

Culture, community, and great food are the defining characteristics of Vancouver’s West End. There’s one special spot that emphasizes the inspiration of fine art, creating a unique and satisfying coffee and brunch experience. Café Portrait, located at 1120 Denman Street, came out of a son’s appreciation for his father’s paintings and a family heritage rich in the beauty of Turkish coffee and cuisine. Open daily with long hours, Café Portrait features wall art, handmade tables, and unique light fixtures made by well-known Turkish artist, Engin Dalyanci. Entering Café Portrait feels like stepping into a European art gallery. It’s a place where creative inspiration flows, and the Turkish espresso keeps up the pace.

A Blend of Creativity & Delicious Flavor

The cafe’s concept came from a desire to create a place where art and flavor meet, according to Dennis Dalyanci, owner. “We wanted to offer more than the typical Vancouver coffee experience,” Dalyanci explained when we stopped by to chat. “Our coffee selection and brunch menu are works of art in themselves. When you enter Café Portrait, you are entering a mood, a space the best artists know and value. A place where the mind overflows with creativity — and the palate is satisfied, too.” Café Portrait regulars come to watch the elaborate preparation of authentic Turkish coffee, including hot sand brewing. Every Americano, latte, and cappuccino is an expression of barista artistry. Café Portrait has a unique and vibrant environment — satisfying and healthy, with the comfort-flavour touches of home cooking. “The café is a tribute to my upbringing in my father’s art studio, but it’s also about the under-appreciated and wholistic significance of my mother’s amazing recipes,” Dalyanci told us.

A Cultural Experience on the Menu

Dalyanci explained, “Our most popular brunch item is our Shakshuka, with tomato, eggs, avocado, and sourdough bread. Our ethnic Turkish Eggs with Pastrami comes with garlic yogurt for dipping and poached eggs nestled inside. Of course, classics like Smoked Salmon Benedict are popular, and we have delicious sautéed mushrooms and other sides so every customer has the meal they love. Turkish coffee is espresso in a small cup, downed quickly — followed by a hearty meal, maybe even a glass of wine.” Café Portrait boasts a full alcoholic beverage menu. Specialty lattes, including lavender, orchid, and matcha are available, as well as a wide selection of premium loose-leaf teas. Rosé, wines, beer, pilsner, and favourite cocktails provide the perfect pairing for every meal.
