Spotlight Series: Cozy Wok
Far-Flung Flavours & West Coast Vibes
The West End has it all — cuisine from around the world, the best beaches, and towering cedars in Stanley Park. The only thing missing was The Cozy Wok. Opened at 854 Denman, The Cozy Wok brought authentic Chinese-Asian flavours with a Western Canadian sit-down restaurant vibe. No more bright lights and disappointing liquor menu — this is a concept restaurant with the food of Asia and the flair of North America.
Traditional Chinese Recipes in a Relaxed Setting
Ted moved to Vancouver from Hong Kong and made the rounds of Richmond’s best restaurants. When he started looking for the perfect high-density, street-front location in the West End, he knew his niche. “Chinese food has been in Vancouver forever. There are great restaurants and talented chefs in every corner of the city. But the experience can be so true to its origins that it becomes jarring for a cross-cultural diner,” Ted explained.
“I knew the gap could be bridged so easily. I’ve enjoyed so many wonderful meals in North American spots that I know how to deliver the complete experience. We’re a great alternative to the typical burger with fries, or nachos and beer. At The Cozy Wok, we make Saltfish & Chicken Fried Rice like grandmothers in China, but we serve it with plate and palate presentation that’s totally North American. With a great liquor menu and contemporary, Western ambiance, our combination has been a hit!”
Richmond’s Best Without Leaving Denman
Full service, dine-in restaurants with seating for more than thirty are a rare bird in the West End. The Cozy Wok draws from regulars who don’t want to wonder if they can get a reservation tonight, and don’t want to sacrifice good quality by going for fast-food.
“Our shareable plates are really popular, because who doesn’t like a nice cocktail with friends for a wind-down Happy Hour? We’ve built a points reward system for our regulars and we’re optimistic that our success on Denman is pushing us towards more locations in the future. We have classy service that’s friendly, our chefs use high-quality ingredients and authentic, time-tested recipes, like Grandma’s Slow-Braised Pork Belly with Mustard Greens. We aren’t an old-school, Chinese, family-style restaurant; dining with us is relaxed and urbane — a delicious, comfortable choice,” Ted added.
