Italy’s Delectable Caffѐ Culture in Vancouver

With two locations in downtown Vancouver’s busy shopping areas, D’oro Gelato e Caffѐ welcomes you into the sublime comfort of Italy’s street-front culture. A menu based on gelato treats, delicious drinks, and bites from their in-store kitchen, means the pleasures of a quiet rest from the city’s rush are in your neighbourhood.

We spoke with D’oro Gelato’s owner and manager, Kristina Sonney, at her Denman Street location recently, to find out what it takes to be a world-class Italian caffѐ in North America.

Designated Authentic by Rome Itself

“Both of our locations have been Italian gelato shops for almost three decades, but we wanted to bring a more authentic Italian food experience when we rebranded as D’oro Gelato e Caffѐ. We set our sights on obtaining official ‘Ospitalita Italiana’ quality endorsement issued by the government of Italy to Italian restaurants all over the world, guaranteeing an exceptional Italian cuisine standard. Every year, we are recertified, based on our authentic ingredients, menu selection, the equipment we use, even our furniture and music,” Sonney explained.

“We focus on the very best products and import many of the ingredients for our menu items. Our coffee is sourced from a 4th generation Italian roaster. We have the perfect wines and evening drinks to pair with a panino or a pastry. Our traditional biscotto, dipped in espresso macchiato is sublime — takes you straight to the streets of Italy, as you sit and enjoy the city’s vitality,” Sonney said.

Signature & Seasonal Gelato Flavours & Dairy-free Sorbetto

With gelato flavours including hazelnut-chocolate from Piemonte and pistachio from Sicily, as well as dairy-free fruit sorbetto — D’oro Gelato has a wide selection of fresh-made, in-house cold treats. “Our aim is for every customer to experience the D’oro service and quality — a gold standard. It’s the stamp of authenticity. It’s why we dream of strolling the streets of Italy and stopping in a caffѐ for a delicious lunch or cappuccino — those exquisite memories,” Sonney told us.

“An affogato topped with Grand Marnier is a delightful way to enjoy gelato with espresso — the word affogato means ‘to drown’ — it’s gelato drowned in deliciousness! Our sfogliatelle ricotta with a mid-day caffѐ corretto tastes of our commitment to an authentic Italian experience. We also offer home-delivery options on our website, and our gelato cakes make every celebration special.”

An Old World Setting with New World Excellence

The Denman location (at Comox Street, a couple of blocks north of English Bay’s beachside Laughing Sculpture) is filled with loyal neighbours who choose Italian excellence for their daily coffee, soup and salad with friends, special occasion dinners, or a night-cap after a romantic walk by the ocean.

Plan to stop in this week. Recall memories of the best of Italian culture with a late-in-the-day drink and D’oro Gelato e Caffѐ’s gift-from-the-house ‘spuntino’ — a sampling of olives, cheese, crisp bread, and cold cuts. Take a trip to Italy, right here in Vancouver’s West End.
