After eight years in the West End and a stunning renovation, the restaurant’s interior design tells the story of courage and perseverance that kept a family going through the toughest of times. Heartfelt Atmosphere & Great Food
We spoke with Viet Nguyen, co-owner, and he explained that many of their menu items came from his mother and grandmother’s recipes. “We took the tastes we loved as kids and gave them a Canadian vibe. Things like our Beef Rib Phở, Pillow Cake, and Chicken Wings. We specialize in vegetarian and vegan menu items, too. If you’ve never had Bánh Mì, ours is really special. Our buns come straight from the best Vietnamese bakery in Vancouver, and we hand-select our produce daily.”
Nguyen continued, “We know the difference our insistence on fresh ingredients makes. Our customers are loyal and they come back over and over, often for their favourite menu items every time! Like one customer who’s come in for years, same day every week, for our Papaya Salad.”
Bright and busy, Ông Bà’s 16-seats are hopping from lunch through to evening hours. Located near the Bank of Montreal with easy street parking along Denman, there’s a brisk crowd moving in and out for the neighbourhood flavours they’ve come to love. “Our spicy lemongrass broth is comfort food, for sure. Batter-fried Basa fillets, steamed vegetables, fish sauce, coconut milk, basil, lotus roots, crispy onions —we have all the little touches that make Vietnamese cuisine amazing,” Nguyen explained.
