Spotlight Series: Peaked Pies

Australia’s Delicious Peaked Pies Explained

More than a decade ago, Kerri Jones opened Peaked Pies in Whistler and watched her little bistro-styled restaurant take off. Now with three locations and a loyal customer-based stretching down the Sea-to-Sky highway and into Vancouver, it’s clear that Australia’s meat pies are a fresh and fast choice Canada is learning to love.

What is a Peaked Pie, you ask? Take tender pastry and fill it with simmered meat and savory seasoning. Bake it to perfection, then top it with a scoop of mashed potatoes. Building to the “peak,” add a layer of mushy peas and rivers of delectable gravy — and you have Peaked Pies!

Savory Pies plus Artisanal Coffee and a Good Beer

“When I first came to Canada, I wondered where the meat pies were! They’re everywhere in Australia and the fact is that meat pies are popular in Commonwealth countries – well, I was surprised to have trouble finding them here. It didn’t take long for our first location in Whistler to reach #3 in the restaurant ratings! It turns out that Canada has been missing hearty and nutritious, homemade Australian meat pies,” Jones explained.

“Our Whistler customers were coming all the way from Vancouver to get our pies, so I expanded and opened our West End location on Denman, as well as our North Burnaby location,” Jones went on to tell us. “There are Australian ex-pats craving the taste of home, and plenty of folks who have travelled and experienced the delicious flavours of our down-under favourites. They’re perfect for a quick snack, or a filling meal – plus we offer frozen pies for customers to take home and reheat for easy, high-quality lunches and quick dinners for the whole family.”

Traditional Sweet Pies for a Yummy Snack (or Meal)

Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner – with dessert, coffee, and drinks on the menu – Peaked Pies (at 975 Denman Street at Nelson, a couple of blocks north of the English Bay Laughing Sculptures) offers a wide menu of down-under goodness. Being licensed means that you can enjoy a cold beer with your pie and Peaked Pies’ baristas take coffee preparation to the heights of artisanal perfection. Free parking at the back of the building and metered parking out front mean it’s an easy spot for warm and comfortable family fare.

Peaked Pies focuses on high quality ingredients in its pies, including vegetarian options. Fraser Valley chicken and AA Alberta beef mean that every bite is strengthening your body while pleasing your tastebuds. In their typical win-win style, Peaked Pies is a big community supporter with popular fundraisers in local elementary schools. You can’t help but feel the warmth and goodness of home when you stop in for an old classic with a new name – Peaked Pies.
