Spotlight Series: Taqueria Jalisco Mexican Restaurant
Mexican By the Beach or in Davie Village
A local restaurant phenomenon has expanded through the West End and we’re here to tell you all about it. Taqueria Jalisco will be opening a location in Davie Village, hot on the heels of its cozy grab-and-go restaurant on Denman.
Birria, Carnitas, Seafood & Veggie
We dropped in to talk with Taqueria Jalisco’s owner, Michelle. “Everyone knows us for our birria,” she said. “Our menu features birria (beef) and carnitas (pork) specialties. Our original location in Surrey is famous for our meat and cheese Mega Quesabirria. We use fresh-made, pan-fried, flour tortillas. Our delicious, slow-cooked birria with spicy broth means our tacos, tortas, and soup are the real thing.”
Taqueria Jalisco’s menu includes hearty Burritos and over-the-top Golden Pizza (a three-layer tortilla filled with cheese and birria). There’s Soft Taco Rosca and Golden Tacos with corn tortillas, onion, cilantro, plus meat and/or veggies. Their Nacho Plate features crispy corn tortilla chips with cheese, beans, pico de gallo, sour cream, and jalapenos.
Agua De Horchata, Café De Olla or Michelada
Michelle went on to explain, “In Surrey, we had lots of customers driving out from Vancouver, so we wanted to bring the flavours closer! Our Denman Street spot is on the second floor of the Starbucks building on the Davie corner. There’s forty seats and a limited bar menu — beer, and spiked mango or strawberry slushies. Our biggest and newest location is opening soon in Davie Village. We went all out on the interior décor and the bar capacity. We’re perfect for a quick stop before hitting the beach or a lingering meal and drinks with friends. We’re the neighbourhood spot with the best authentic Mexican favourites. We know what Jalisco should taste like — we’re thrilled to introduce the West End to the joy of a Mexican party!”
At their upstairs location on Denman, they have a couple of patio tables with an ocean breeze, directly across from the Laughing Sculptures. Here, the traditions are in the family and their roots go deep. The wall mural inside the restaurant was painted by a local West End artist and pays homage to Michelle’s parents, the founders of Taqueria Jalisco. Cozy and inviting, this beachside location is a quick hop from the volleyball nets in the sand and hanging out with friends at English Bay. When the fireworks are lighting up the sky, a no-cars street party has Denman dancing, or it’s just a perfect West End afternoon at the beach, Taqueria Jalisco has food and drinks to make the day extra special.
