Spotlight Series: The Basic Eats

Down Home Goodness & a Diner Vibe

We all hanker for a comforting meal that’s in the ‘hood, priced affordably, with generous portions — all-day breakfast and our favourite lunch specialities in a family-friendly vibe where staff and regulars know each other by name. The West End has one restaurant with two locations, and locals know The Basic Eats is the place to get your cravings filled.

Basic Breakfast & Lunch Favourites with Love

“We source our ingredients locally, because we’re proud to be a hub of the community. We’re your grandmother’s great cooking, the farmer’s fresh produce and eggs, and Canadian menu favourites,” Brendon Chan told us. “Our regulars know me as ‘The Guy In-Front’ but our restaurants are all about my family, too — we’ve created diners in the West End where we’re proud to know everyone’s welcome!”

Chan’s father opened the first location in 1993 with his business partner, Victor. As the years went by, the name changed and new locations were added. Davie Village, Denman Street, and Main Street — each location brought the same welcoming atmosphere and a satisfying menu that was consistent and delicious. French toast for weekly brunch with friends, or coffee and a classic bacon-and-eggs start to the day — everyone’s favourites are on the menu, homemade with common-sense cooking.

Friends Together for Memorable Meals

“We have so many regulars who come in every day, and they’re really passionate about their location. Behind-the-scenes, we know that our menu is the same across all three locations, but our regulars all swear that their spot is the best,” Chan said. “We’ve been doing this so long, we’ve got stories of customers meeting here, getting married and now bringing their kids and grandkids! The West End was always the perfect, comfortable place — friendly, close to the beach, relaxing with friends and family. Our customers appreciate us, but it goes both ways… our staff really cares about everyone who comes in.”

The Basic Eats’ menu ranges from Belgium waffles with bacon, sausage, eggs, and fruit, to eggs Benedict with pan-fried potatoes. There’s blueberry pancakes and vegetarian omelettes with cheddar cheese. Breakfast is available from early opening through to mid-afternoon closing, seven days a week. Their lunch selection includes daily soup specials, classic sandwiches (BLT, grilled cheese, Monte Cristo, Reuben, clubhouse, tuna melt, and more), and grill favourites (hamburgers, chicken burgers, fries and gravy). The coffee’s on and refills are free.

Stop in to Say Hi & Fill a Craving

A beer, cider, and Caesar selection means your lunch is perfect, whether its smoked corned beef hash and eggs with fried onions and peppers, or tofu scramble with spinach, tomato, and mushrooms. Maybe you’re craving pulled pork eggs Benedict or a hamburger with egg and avocado. It’s a comforting break in your day or a weekend ritual to cherish — food that satisfies, friends who look forward to seeing you, and the great meals you love. Stop in this week at The Basic Eats on Denman at Barclay, or on Davie west of Burrard.
