Spotlight Series: House of Dosas

Arrive Hungry for Dosas & Friends

A long-time Vancouver legend is now in Davie Village. House of Dosas is famous for its 24/7 hours, its Dosa Monday specials, and its iconic Kingsway location. Now, you can find your favourite South Indian dishes at their third location in the West End.

Chutneys, Curries, Masala – Perfect Spices

Owner, Say Kesavan, told us about the origins of House of Dosas’ popular appeal. “Our first priority is fresh ingredients,” Kesavan said, “but that’s just the beginning of what makes our menu so special. We pay attention to the health benefits of our ingredients. We value the ancient traditions, flavours and individual spices that lead to holistic wellness. Our dishes are prepared fresh, on site. We’re open all night and we know that’s great for shift workers and night owls, but it’s also great for our chefs. It takes time to get the spice mix, the curry simmer, the chutney — just right!”

For those unsure of what “dosa” is, let’s give a House of Dosas definition: it’s a rolled, crispy cylinder made with fermented rice and lentil batter. Filled with meat, veggies, or dipped plain in house-made sauces, a dosa is hearty and packed with flavour. There are many mix-and-match filling and dipping options, and everyone has a menu favourite, according to Kesavan.

“Our most popular item is Mysore Masala Dosa and our Monday night regulars know we have a variety of our best at the price we’ve promised to never increase! Our kitchen is hopping, all day and night. Besides dosas, we feature great dishes like Seeraga Samba Biryani with short-grain rice and the perfect mix of cumin, cinnamon, garlic, chilli, coriander, mint, black and green cardamom, and star anise.”

Prepared Fresh — Filling Your Hunger

House of Dosas’ menu stretches from South India through Sri Lanka. A house special is Kothu Parotta — Sri Lankan flatbread chopped and stir-fried with veggies and gravy. Adding eggs or a meat selection creates a filling and healthy entrée.

“Preparing Sri Lankan Hoppers tableside is a lot of fun. We offer this specialty a couple times a month at our Davie Street location. We send social media alerts out on IG and Facebook, and Vancouver’s Hopper lovers show up to enjoy a beloved street food meal,” Kesavan said.

Options Galore — Vegan, Gluten-free & Rava Dosa, Paper Dosa

House of Dosas is located at 1188 Davie Street, just east of Jim Devas Plaza. Licensed with a good selection of cocktails, wines, and beer-on-tap – including Baadshah golden lager and IPA – there’s a delicious meal waiting, whether for lunch, dinner, evening after a show, or middle-of-the-night boredom-buster.

Taste and wellness unite in South Indian cuisine’s healthy advantages — experience the healing properties of each spice combination. And don’t forget to finish your meal off with a traditional South Indian filter coffee, brewed with thick coffee concentrate and steamed milk. Come find your place at the table and become part of the House of Dosas family.
