Momo (Dumplings) and Indo-Chinese Favourites
A wildly popular restaurant has spilled over from Delta and opened its second location in Davie Village. Momo Factory has a loyal following at its flagship location, including folks driving east from Vancouver, so it was time to bring Indian-Nepalese-Chinese cuisine to the West End.
A Tibetan Tradition & the Best Indian Flavours
Momo Factory’s owner, Raju Bhattrai, explained how momo became a phenomenon. “India has a long history of delicious street food. In Delhi, people flock to food trucks, where they eat their meal roadside. We want to recreate the same feeling at Momo Factory — the authenticity, the flavours, and the memories of food enjoyed in the streets.” Bhattrai continued, “Young lovers in areas of Nepal, Tibet, and northern India often express their affection by sharing a meal of momo. Similar to dumplings, momo has wonderful and unique flavours and a strong cultural significance. In Canada, we have enthusiastic and loyal customers — some are new to the momo experience, and others can’t imagine life before age forty without momo!”
Classic Chinese Dishes with Tandoori, Too
Bhattrai went on to explain how the momo is cooked and served. “Each momo’s meat or vegetable filling is wrapped in a thin layer of whole wheat dough. Our most popular momo is ground chicken —spiced before being wrapped, shaped, and steamed. Momo is served on an eight-piece plate with homemade dipping sauce. You can’t enjoy real momo without spicy chili or tomato garlic sauce on the side. “In the regions of the world where momo is treasured, there comes a certain age in life when another category of dishes becomes popular. We built that age transition into Momo Factory’s menu because we want the whole family to enjoy the pleasures of Indo-Chinese fusion. We have tandoori items, including butter chicken and naan, as well as Szechuan chicken, chow mein, congee, and wonton soup. We’re proud of our curated menu, including vegetarian and gluten-free dishes.”
Momo & More in the West End
Bhattrai added, “We prepare fried momo as well, in our five hundred-degree clay oven, pairing them with our homemade tandoori sauce. Our lollipop chicken is a favourite, too. Our restaurants are licensed, so every meal can shine as it’s paired with local B.C. wines, our special Momo Factory cocktails, or beer on tap. Some foods are soul pleasures, and we were thrilled to realize there’s demand in the Lower Mainland for our unique Nepalese-Indian-Chinese favourites.” Momo Factory is at the top of the hill, in the heart of Davie Village, at 1143 Davie. Open for lunch, straight through to late, Momo is the perfect place to take someone special, or to meet with the gang for a beer and flavours that make every meal vibrant and satisfying. Known in the Himalayas and beyond as a food of the people — affordable, filling, and beloved — prepare yourself to fall in love, right here in the West End, as you join the Momo movement!
