Community Partnership for Clean Streets

We live, work, and play in an urban landscape that is constantly growing and changing. Keeping Vancouver’s streets worthy of our world-class distinction is a big job. Two local non-profit organizations have teamed up to get the hard work done.

Gordon Neighbourhood House is tucked away in the West End, where it has served the area’s residents for over 80 years. The West End Business Improvement Association (BIA) partners with Gordon Neighbourhood House staff to reduce street-level garbage and graffiti in the area.

Neighbourliness, One Clean Street at a Time

We met up with Luc, point-person for the Clean Team program, to discuss how the Clean Team is helping neighbourhood residents and businesses maintain their streets.

“We have four part-time team members outside working, all year round, building relationships with area businesses and picking up litter. They have supplies for graffiti and illegal poster removal, as well. Each team member is a community liaison, building a strong network of individuals who care about the West End,” Luc said.

“The West End BIA has generously provided funding for the Clean Team and Gordon Neighbourhood House staff coordinates the program’s logistics. Our Clean Team staff have branded uniforms and supply carts that can be seen hard at work in every type of weather.”

A Place to Meet Friends and Take Care of the Streets

An important part of the Clean Team program is their volunteer Community Cleanup events, run on a regular schedule during warm months. Often sponsored by local businesses, a fun breakfast or lunch is served to support the volunteers who spend two hours on a Saturday morning picking up garbage from a pre-mapped route.

“We provide everything the volunteers need to do the job easily and safely. We have families with kids that come out, and it’s a great way to get to know other community-minded people. We have a special Community Cleanup event planned this summer after the Honda Celebration of Light fireworks, as we know that having hundreds of thousands of people at English Bay takes a toll on the streets,” Luc explained.

“It’s impossible for City staff to keep up with the constant flow of street-level litter problems. We are a conduit for individual residents and community-minded businesses to come together and get the job done. Local businesses can sponsor a volunteer Community Cleanup day, and we have corporate branding opportunities that give exposure to our partners’ commitment to the West End.”
